London Weekend Television - Farewell |
Sunday October 27 2002 was the last day that LWT-branded presentation junctions were to grace our screens. During the day, three special junctions paid homage to 34 years of the LWT name. The first tribute took place at 5.26am, with a 1970s style start-up routine.
Transcript of the 5.26am event:
[00:00] 'LWT LONDON Transmitters In Service' caption fades up.
[00:01] Trish Bertram: this is London Weekend Television, broadcasting a colour 625-line analogue service on the UHF band and also on digital terrestrial, digital satellite and digital cable networks by the MPEG-2 encoding system.
[00:15] Cue Don Jackson's 'A Well Swung Fanfare' (Oscar Brandenburg Orchestra. Duration - 2 mins, 23 seconds). [Includes at 01:32 cut to LWT ident].
[02:38] Glen Thompsett: good morning and welcome to London Weekend Television - [cuts to LWT still of the South Bank studios at 02:41] - direct from our world famous studios on the South Bank. In a few moments, we'll be joining our colleagues at ITN for the 'ITV Morning News'. But first, a look at the rest of this morning's programmes.
[02:51] Vertical picture wipe to London Weekend programme menu caption.
[02:52] Glen Thompsett: at six o'clock, of course, 'GMTV'. Then at nine twenty-five, 'The Premiership'. CITV starts at ten twenty-five featuring 'Merlin The Magical Puppy', 'The Upstairs Downstairs Bears' and 'Maisy'. At eleven, 'My Favourite Hymns' - this week Denise Robertson - and that's followed by 'That's Esther' at midday. At half past twelve 'The Week'. Then at one o'clock, 'Jonathan Dimbleby'.
[03:14] Cut to London Weekend clock.
[03:14] Glen Thompsett: but now, with the time rapidly approaching five thirty, it's time to cross over to ITN for the 'ITV Morning News'. This is London Weekend Television.
[03:24] Fade to black and fade up 'ITV Morning News'.

The second LWT tribute junction took place at 11.19pm. The old 'Ribbon' ident was brought out of mothballs.
Glenn Thompsett: you're watching London Weekend Television, which began broadcasting 34 years ago. Well, this is sadly our last weekend. From tomorrow, there's a new look to ITV 1. Well, I've personally enjoyed my fifteen years with you. So, on behalf of the whole team at LWT, this is Glenn Thompsett saying thank you for watching and do join us for a short farewell tribute in one hour. In the meantime, Melvyn Bragg with LWT's award-winning arts series, 'The South Bank Show'.

Glenn Thompsett: this is London Weekend Television. Don't forget we have plenty more entertainment to come throughout the night and daytime ITV 1 includes 'This Morning'. Well, things will be a little different from tomorrow, won't they Trish?
Trish Bertram: they certainly will Glenn. From tomorrow, ITV 1 will be comin' at ya with a whole new look! Which means, sadly, this is where you and I bow out.
Glenn Thompsett: certainly is. But it's been fun though, Trish.
Trish Bertram: it's been many years, Glenn!
Glenn Thompsett: so, for the final time...
Trish Bertram: ...from our studios on the South Bank...
Glenn Thompsett: ...this is LWT...
